What is BHRT?
It is a complex task a practitioner in close collaboration with the patient attempts to complete in order to re-balance the patient's hormones, whether the patient be a female or male.
The most common cases are female patients who encounter moderate to severe hormonal decline/imbalance around menopausal years coming up with a whole array of unpleasant symptoms requiring medical help.
The terminology is still controversial despite the proven facts:
Every single hormonal component used in BHRT has the identical molecular structure to the one a human body produces.
There are FDA approved commercially available bio-identical hormonal products, such as: Estradiol presented in different brand names, different strengths, different dosage forms and different routes of administration: Climara cream, Estring vaginal ring, Estrace tablet or cream, Femring vaginal ring, Vivelle cream, etc. Same goes for Progesterone presented as Prometrium capsules.
Then one might wonder why there is a need for a compounding pharmacy for BHRT.
The answer is simple: customization. Every single individual is unique, particularly when it is about hormonal re-balance.
Why BHRT?
Because biologically identical hormones (the same molecular structure as our own body makes) are a safer version for attempting to correct the imbalance compared to synthetic ones that can have more severe negative side effects. The key to success is proper assessment and individualized, holistic approach.
Why a compounding pharmacy?
It is the only way to get a customized approach for the purpose of correcting the imbalance.
"Our hormone response is as unique as our fingerprints. Therefore there is no magic hormone or combination of hormones that can be indiscriminately used by all women. Each woman is an individual and hormonal balance must be the ultimate goal for all women."
Joseph Collins, N.D.

BHRT and its applications
BHRT, as already mentioned, is mostly applied to female patients, and mostly around menopause.
Yet a woman may encounter hormonal imbalance as early as puberty and as late as after the age of 65.
Recognizing the symptoms and addressing them appropriately requires a very knowledgeable practitioner. Below is a list of the most common symptoms that bring the women to the doctors office:
Hot flashes
Night sweats
Mood swings
Headaches/Migraines
Irritability
Anxiety
Depression
Sleep disturbances
Short term memory loss
Inability to concentrate
Foggy brain
Fatigue
Fluid retention
Heavy/Irregular menses
Breakthrough bleeding
Breast tenderness
Fibrocystic breast
Vaginal dryness
Dry skin/thin hair
Hair loss
Stress incontinence
Cramps
Food cravings
Low sex drive/low libido
Weight gain
Arthritic pain
The main hormones involved in the imbalance are: estrogens with their three main components in the human body- estrone, estradiol, estriol, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid-T4 &T3, cortisol, DHEA, pregnenolone.
BHRT also applies to andropause, which the equivalent of menopause for men.
Most commonly, after the age of 50, men also have a decline in their main steroid sexual hormone: testrosterone. Because the symptoms of
the decline are not as severe and diversified as for women, men do not seek much medical attention for them. They are also considered part of normal ageing. It is when the decline is too severe, or too rapid, or associated with other hormonal changes leading to noticeable discomfort, men seek medical help. In most of these cases adrenal glands and thyroid gland are the ones involved in the imbalance.
Some of the symptoms bringing men in andropause to doctors office are:
Low libido/low sex drive
Fatigue
Muscle weakness
Depression
Foggy brain
Inability to concentrate
Sleeping disturbances
Weight gain
